The campaign 60x60 plus: A doctor's humanitarian journey 66 years ago

Seniors can be successful in a variety of fields: they can celebrate military anniversaries, take care of their grandchildren, enjoy memories or help other people in need. The choice is theirs.

Providing medical assistance to those in need is one of the noblest aspects of the medical profession. Such help has a special dimension when doctors leave their homes and travel far to serve other people whose lives and health have been affected by war, disaster, or accident.

Dr. Alina Wierzbowska was an experienced physician, a specialist in hematology when she began her journey towards her sixth decade of life. She had lived through the war and knew from personal experience how precious any help was. In 1955, together with other Polish doctors, she went on a humanitarian mission to North Korea. She was the oldest member of that group of Polish doctors.

I have learned the story of Dr. Alina Wierzbowska's humanitarian journey thanks to her granddaughter Hanna, currently living in Sweden, who shared a collection of souvenir photos with our editorial team.
